The folding fan as a target

December 31, 2007 at 9:46 pm (movie, Music)

I believe I have found the song that was the inspiration for a segment of Bladerunner. There is a Geisha advertisement and her song is similar to the one on the album Ensemble Nipponia – Japan Traditional Vocal and Instrumental Music, called 扇の的 or The folding fan as a target.

This famous piece for voice and biwa is based on a complex legend similar to that of William Tell, in which a folding fan,
instead of the famous Swiss apple, serves as the target. Most biwa music is quite ancient. Voice and instrument in the narrative chants tend to complement each other as in Western recitative; the large ornamental leaps for the voice are characteristic of the genre.

Thru the Mœbius Strip

February 24, 2006 at 6:19 pm (Animation, movie)

There is a wonderful animated feature film by Moebius AKA Jean Giraud called, Thru the Mœbius Strip, that was just shown at the Cannes film festival in December so it can’t be long till it comes to us here and I will predict in May. It is a sci-fi tale about a physicist who becomes trapped on a distant planet after crossing a space-time portal and eight years later his son Jac finds the entrance and proceeds to rescue him and help his dad’s alien benefactor regain his throne. Mark Hamill is the voice of the father for the boy in the film and Michael Dorn (Worf) of Star Trek: The Next Generation is King Tor’s voice. I posted about Mr. Giraud before here.

Here is a brief synopsis from the website…

This is a story about the coming of age of a brave, resourceful 14 year old boy who grew up refusing to accept the loss of his father.

Out of the strength of his conviction, he reaches the Planet Raphicca, 27.2 million light years away, to find that his father is prisoner in a kingdom of giant aliens who believe in magic and a medieval code of chivalry.

In the midst of a raging battle between good and evil, Jac rescues his father, his new found family of aliens, the planet of Raphicca, and ultimately, the Universe.

I couldn’t believe that no one had updated the Wiki about this so I added the movie title in there but have no idea how to add URL to it properly. Someone needs to add a whole wiki page about the movie itself but I am scared to attempt it. The whole process of reading how even is daunting and convoluted in such a way as maybe to keep people from actually doing anything. I tried asking for a page to be made for it and found out I couldn’t without looking for the right page discription in a sea of them and I gave up.

By the way…
The Möbius strip or Möbius band (pronounced /ˈmøbiʊs/) is a surface with only one side and only one boundary component. It has the mathematical property of being non-orientable. It was co-discovered independently by the German mathematicians August Ferdinand Möbius and Johann Benedict Listing in 1858.
A model can easily be created by taking a paper strip and giving it a half-twist, and then merging the ends of the strip together to form a single strip. In Euclidean space there are in fact two types of Möbius strips depending on the direction of the half-twist: clockwise and counterclockwise. The Möbius strip is therefore chiral, which is to say that it is “handed”.
